In the United States, a school shooting takes place once a week, on average. While many citizens support tighter gun restrictions, Congress has made little progress in gun policy. The lack of significant gun control measures and a wave of boycott threats have prompted Corporate America to take the issue into their own hands.
Responding to consumer demands, several large companies with ties to the NRA have made drastic changes to their policies. Two major gun retailers, in particular, have taken a tough stance. Below are some of the top companies that have voluntarily acted on gun control.
Dick’s Sporting Goods
After the Parkland shooting that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Dick’s Sporting Goods will no longer sell “assault-style rifles” also known as modern sporting rifles. Additional changes include:
- No firearm sales to anyone under 21
- No hi-capacity magazine sales
- No plan to ever sell bump stocks
Walmart
In 2015, Walmart quit selling modern sporting rifles like the AR-15. This year, the world’s largest retailer will also stop selling:
- Firearms and ammunition to anyone under 21
- Products resembling assault rifles (like airsoft guns) on their website
Kroger
As of March 2018, Kroger supermarkets will stop selling guns altogether. They had quit selling assault-style rifles in Fred Meyer stores years ago, and then changed their policy to no longer sell guns to those under 21. Most recently, they have decided to completely scrap gun sales.
L.L. Bean
L.L. Bean is a clothing and outdoor recreation equipment retailer that sells guns only at its flagship location in Maine. The company will no longer sell guns and ammunition to anyone under 21. Their guns are limited to hunting and target shooting firearms.
No More NRA Discounts
Not all companies that support stricter gun laws sell guns themselves. Many others have terminated their discount programs for NRA members. Some of these include:
- Delta
- United Airlines
- Hertz
- Wyndham Hotels
- Best Western
- Enterprise Rent-a-Car
- Avis Budget Group
- Metlife
- Symantec
In Florida, lawmakers have passed the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act to keep guns away from dangerous individuals and promote safety at school. One of the provisions of the new law implements risk protection orders which allow courts to prohibit mentally ill individuals from purchasing guns. Under the law, police officers can also seize firearms from people who they believe may be a threat to themselves or others.
Since the law passed, many people have had their guns taken away without having committed a crime. In Florida, you have a right to be protected against wrongful weapons seizure.
